Executive Director, Skills Center

BCI is seeking an Executive Director to develop and lead BCI’s Skills Center, a revolutionary non-profit organization that will complement BCI’s current family of organizations serving the employment goals of hundreds of persons with disabilities and business partners in the St. Louis area.

This organization will be the first of its kind and offers a unique opportunity for a growth-oriented business leader interested in differently employing this workforce in the competitive work market.

About BCI’s Skills Center

BCI’s Skills Center is specifically designed for people with developmental disabilities. The Center will provide replicated work settings as well as customized training and professional support for clients seeking vocational skills. The Center will offer a unique opportunity to anyone in the region who has a disability and wants to gain real-life vocational training and work experience with the goal of becoming competitively employed. As the Skills Center grows, an array of career paths and vocational training options will be offered and will be mutually developed with business partners across the community.


Essential Functions of the Executive Director Position:

Reporting to the BCI Chief Executive Officer, the Skills Center Director will be responsible for the following:

  1. Launch Skills Center, executing against the strategic goals and plan developed by the Board, and developing and managing the launch budget and schedule.

  2. Continually refine and improve plans related to the Skills Center with input from internal and external resources, identifying and reducing organizational risk proactively.

  3. Manage the operation of the entire Skills Center, as set forth in the annual budget, program plans, policy of the Board, and strategic vision.

  4. Coordinate board and committee actions to obtain closure on policy issues and subsequent coordination of staff to implement board policy.

  5. Hire, coach, develop and lead a potentially growing team of direct and indirect reports including, but not limited to a Curriculum Developer, Vocational Instructors, Behavioral Specialists, Benefits Coordinator, Business Development and Account Management professionals.

  6. Ensure the continual and effective marketing of the Skills Center’s services to employers and clients alike

  7. Effectively work with the BCI Leadership team to coordinate shared services (Finance, Human Resources, Clerical Administration, and other consultative services).



  1. Minimum of 8 years’ professional experience, including responsibility for a significant budget, organization development/leadership of a new division within an organization, staff management, and communications both inside and outside the organization.  Fundraising experience Is a plus.

  2. Demonstration of a highly disciplined approach for successful project delivery against defined milestones

  3. Knowledge within the fields of human resources management and workforce development

  4. Passion for BCI’s overarching mission with a desire to serve adults with disabilities. Must be service-minded with a passion for regional betterment

  5. A high degree of integrity that garners the trust and respect of others

  6. Ability to effectively respond to and balance the competing needs of stakeholders (parents/guardians, customers, suppliers, funding organizations and community leaders).

  7. Strong interpersonal skills that include the ability to inspire and motivate as well as effectively manage conflict

  8. Excellent written and communication skills including public speaking

  9. Solid computer skills including proficiency in MS Office applications

  10. Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning.
